Miss Albany Diner Description:
Driving down Broadway out of downtown Albany, you may think you're heading straight into the belly of industrial hell, but just keep an eye out for Nipper, the RCA dog who's perched expectantly atop one of the many warehouses along the road. Settled in a classic diner car (just down the road from Nipper), the Miss Albany Diner is one of the area's most celebrated lunch-and-brunch joints. (And if the diner looks familiar, you may have caught sight of it in the movie Ironweed, based on the novel by Pulitzer-winning Albany native William Kennedy.) The diner has been open for business since 1941, but this isn't your ordinary diner fare by any stretch. Eggs take a turn for the unusual with curry sauce; the Bostonian is back to melt in your mouth; and after fasting for a few days, we love to order up the house specialty---MAD Irish Toast, with pecan cream cheese slathered between two thick slices of Texas-style French toast, then covered in an butterscotch Irish whiskey sauce. This place gets jammed on the weekends---it's perhaps one of the only diners where you'll be served by tuxedoed waiters--so turn up early if you're hoping for a booth.
